Merchandise Manager

The McKittrick Hotel, home of Sleep No More, is seeking a Merchandise Manager. This candidate should be highly experienced in buying, curating and maintaining inventory for both a boutique online and in house store.  Alternatively they may have experience creating and maintaining a high end, bespoke catalog. The ideal candidate will be passionate about curating a unique collection of high end merchandise, oddities and wares consistent with the aesthetic of The McKittrick Hotel. This role requires impeccable taste, strong organizational skills, an eye for design, an ability to manage logistics, and an openness to learn and be part of a team. 3-5 years experience as a buyer for a boutique retail shop, hotel, or other experience required. 


To curate, purchase and maintain a unique collection of merchandise for The McKittrick Hotel and other future projects.  To help design the physical store. To oversee the establishment of both our online and in house boutique store.  On a daily basis to manage a retail team, to control inventory, to be responsible for sales, purchase quality goods, and establish a point of sale system.



– Curate a collection of interesting, bespoke merchandise in line with the Hotel’s particular aesthetic.

– Study, engage with and draw inspiration from varied sources (digital design concepts, props, scenery, photographs, scripts, etc.)

– Understand the unique, established environment of the Hotel and thoughtfully choose merchandise offerings that are in line with the existing vision.

– Gain a strong understanding of the customer through experiencing the various offerings of the Hotel and any provided feedback

– Create, maintain and share design, process, and product concept documents

– Help Curate the physical and online store.  Ensuring it is unique and guest friendly. 


– Responsible for researching and purchasing approved merchandise in the appropriate quantities and of the appropriate quality

– Form and maintain relationships with vendors

– Negotiate pricing and manage vendor contracts

– Analyze the competition, do market research. Shop online and in person to bring fresh ideas to the table.

– Manage purchase order process. Maintain accurate ship/cancel dates on order spreadsheets. Ensure that all POs are created and completed accurately.

– Execute and initiate merchandising strategies.


– Responsible for maintaining a meticulous online inventory that can be shared with relevant team members and departments

– Create and maintain purchase order log

– Maintain the buy plans to ensure accuracy

– Responsible for organization and upkeep of current in house stock


– Will play a key role in establishing a point of sale system

– Responsible for ensuring correctness of inventory in point of sale system

– Responsible for online/ virtual store upkeep


– Coordinate purchase orders and payments.

– Partner with the Finance Dept on the determination of receipt plans, financial goals, and payment disbursement.

– Analyze sales trends, inventory and margin to achieve sales goals

– Run weekly, monthly, and quarterly selling reports to recap and analyze business, making recommendations for driving improved performance and identifying opportunities.

 – Vendor contract negotiation

 – Adhere to and maintain a strict budget


– Review historical performance at the category and key item level to determine repurchasing

– Liaise with marketing and other departments to create sales strategies

– Attend relevant meetings.

– Maintain working knowledge of G suite and Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, 

– This role will report to The Director of Operations.


– 3-5 years of purchasing experience at a boutique retail shop, hotel, or other relevant establishment

– Extensive experience in maintaining inventories, online selling, and budget management 

– Ability to easily manage logistics 

– An eye for design and ability to curate a cohesive collection of goods

– Strong interpersonal skills and an openness to learn and be a part of a team 

– Extremely detail oriented and organized

– Strong negotiation, verbal and written communication skills.

– Ability to juggle multiple assignments and balance priorities as required

– Working Knowledge of G suite and  Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook,


– Full Time Salary, Exempt


– This role will report to The Director of Operations.
